The Pillars of Human Performance

Sleep

Sleep is essential for everyone’s health and well-being, however, every night millions of people do not get enough sleep and many of us suffer from sleep deprivation, fatigue and various sleeping disorders.

60% of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more and over 40% of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month. 69% of children experience one or more sleep problems a few nights or more during a week. Most sleep problems simply go undiagnosed and untreated.

During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines, some of which help promote sleep. Certain cytokines need to increase when you have an infection or inflammation, or when you’re under stress. Sleep deprivation may decrease production of these protective cytokines. In addition, infection-fighting antibodies and cells are reduced during periods when you don’t get enough sleep. So, your body needs sleep to fight infectious diseases. Long-term lack of sleep also increases your risk of obesity, diabetes, cancers, mental health issues and heart & blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease.

Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet is vital for good health and wellbeing. Food provides our bodies with the energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals to live, grow and function properly. We need a wide variety of different foods to provide the right amounts of nutrients for good health. Enjoyment of a healthy diet can be one of the great cultural pleasures of life.

An unhealthy diet increases the risk of many diet-related diseases including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, atherosclerosis, obesity, some forms of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, dental caries, gall bladder disease, dementia and nutritional anaemias.

bad-health

Physical Activity

Given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It’s essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life into old age. It’s medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have:

  • up to 35% lower risk of heart disease & stroke
  • up to 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes
  • up to 50% lower risk of colon cancer
  • up to 20% lower risk of breast cancer
  • 30% lower risk of early death
  • up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis
  • up to 68% lower risk of hip fracture
  • 30% lower risk of falls (among older adults)
  • up to 30% lower risk of depression
  • up to 30% lower risk of dementia

Resilience

Do you recover enough? Do your work days include any breaks? Prolonged stress without regular and sufficient recovery weakens your body’s defenses and increases the risk of cardiovascular and lifestyle diseases. The consequences of sleep deprivation can be seen in many areas: at work, during leisure time and physiologically in your body. Long-term sleeplessness puts you at risk of many diseases and is also an occupational safety risk.

Are you active enough? Every fitness-enhancing physical activity session is an investment in your future – good fitness can increase the functional quality of your life by as many as 20 years! Even small changes can significantly improve your well-being!

Our Campaigns

Avoiding Burnout

We seek to create an impact in Work and in Sports in the following areas:

STRESS cost the economy a massive £6.5bn in 2013, demonstrating how prevalent an issue stress in the workplace has become in the UK. That year there were 10.4 million days lost to stress, with the cost of ‘sick’ days being £618. With presenteeism also on the rise (employees coming to work disengaged, tired, unmotivated and too stressed to work) businesses are likely to see costs rise if they don’t take action soon.

FATIGUE has been implicated in 20% of fatal accidents on major roads and costs the UK £115 – £240 million per year in terms of work accidents alone. Fatigue results in slower reactions, reduced ability to process information, memory lapses, absent-mindedness, decreased awareness, lack of attention, underestimation of risk, reduced coordination and lead to errors and accidents, ill-health and injury, and reduced productivity.

OVERTRAINING frequently occurs in athletes who are training for competition or a specific event and train beyond the body’s ability to recover. Athletes often exercise longer and harder so they can improve. But with inadequate rest and recovery, these training regimens can backfire, and actually decrease performance.

Preventing Obesity

We seek to influence behaviours to promote healthy lifestyles and help to address the current obesity crisis:

Key facts

  • Worldwide obesity has nearly doubled since 1980.
  • In 2008, more than 1.4 billion adults, 20 and older, were overweight. Of these over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese.
  • 35% of adults aged 20 and over were overweight in 2008, and 11% were obese.
  • 65% of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight.
  • More than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011.
  • Obesity is preventable.

Overweight and obesity are the fourth leading risk for global deaths. At least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. In addition, 44% of the diabetes burden, 23% of the ischaemic heart disease burden and between 7% and 41% of certain cancer burdens are attributable to overweight and obesity.

Active Ageing

We seek to encourage everyone to have active lifestyles, no matter what age:

To stay healthy or to improve health, young people need to do three types of physical activity each week: aerobic, muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening activity. There is now strong evidence that suggests that remaining physically active in later life can help to maintain both physical and mental health and well being.

Physical activity can;

  • Help to reduce the likelihood of suffering from many diseases
  • Help in the management of existing conditions,
  • Help to maintain mobility and balance in older adults
  • Reduce the risk of falling
  • Activity with others can help to avoid problems caused by loneliness and isolation.

Achieving Well-Being

We seek to support people in achieving Well-Being and enable greater improvements in Performance:

In recent years, well-being has moved from the realm of philosophy to that of science. There has been a growing body of research into what contributes to the quality of people’s experiences of their lives. This has enabled a new understanding of the factors that both influence and constitute well-being.

The science of ‘subjective well-being’ suggests that as well as experiencing good feelings, people need:

  • a sense of individual vitality
  • to undertake activities which are meaningful, engaging, and which make them feel competent and autonomous
  • a stock of inner resources to help them cope when things go wrong and be resilient to changes beyond their immediate control.

Firstbeat: Daily Stress & Recovery Analysis

firstbeat-banner

Stress and recovery analysis in Firstbeat SPORTS software is heart rate variability based method for detecting how the body reacts to different stress factors in athlete’s life providing complete tools to monitor overall training load and recovery processes.

Recovery index

The recovery test in Firstbeat SPORTS is based on overnight heart rate analysis. The recovery index is calculated from the first four sleeping hours providing accurate information on the recovery processes. Recovery index is affected by the heart rate and heart rate variability indexes (HF and LF power) and it is presented in both absolute number and in percentages of maximum recovery.

See More on Daily Stress & Recovery

Daily Stress Load

Professional athletes train up to 25 hours a week, but how are the rest of the week’s 143 hours taken into account in training planning? Leisure time – the things athletes do or don’t do – affects the overall training load and ability to recover. Firstbeat stress analysis provides concrete tools to measure how the other factotrs than training are affecting on body. With illustrative reporting the athletes can be guided to look after their wellbeing in their civil life as well to support the concept of being an athlete 24/7.

  • See how travel affects the body and adopt practices that promote the recovery process (when and what to eat/drink, cool- downs, breaks/naps while traveling, etc.)
  • Determine if lifestyle-related factors promote or reduce recovery among players
  • Pay special attention to athletes who are going through big changes in their “civil life” (e.g. worries, newborn child, school and work stress)

IMG_0344
Maximising Recovery
To get the most out of the recovery analysis, we recommend to use the recovery assessment in the following conditions:

  • Measure the baseline recovery level for each player before the season. This makes further comparisons of the recovery status more accurate during the season.
  • Pay special attention to players whose subjective feelings and performance level indicate symptoms of fatigue.
  • Measure how long it generally takes to recover from the games and apply this information in training planning.
  • Players with the highest and lowest Training Effect value in team training are suggested to be monitored.

Recovery follow-up
Recovery test report provides also follow-up chart from previous recovery index levels. The chart helps the coach visually see how well the overloading periods have conducted and when the athlete is ready again for harder training.

Fatigue Science Video - Be Alert

Fatigue Science offers the most accurate technology in the world for practically and objectively measuring fatigue and quantifying how it affects mental efficiency, reaction times and performance.

Their scientifically validated technology allows organizations and individuals to view both real-time fatigue metrics and aggregated fatigue analytics.

Healthcare Providers

In today’s increasingly hectic world, people are working more and sleeping less. Inadequate sleep compromises cognitive functioning, slows physical reaction speed, increases obesity risk factors, is linked to diabetes and cancers, impairs judgment and overall reduces human health, performance and productivity.

We work with providers of Healthcare to implement the scientifically validated technology to help pinpoint periods of optimal and compromised health & performance.

Medical Personnel

The medical industry requires staff to work non-standard and lengthy schedules which can lead to increased fatigue and predicted risk of medical error.

To ensure the health and well-being of patients, the healthcare industry is dependent on having alert personnel 24/7. Readiband™ Wrist-worn ActigraphFatigue Science Readiband

The Readiband is a wrist-worn actigraphy device that permits the accurate characterization of sleep quality; sleep quantity, and sleep/wake timing without the requirement to undergo complicated polysomnographic procedures. The Readiband works by continuously tracking wrist movements 16 times per second and continuously storing these for later analysis.

At the conclusion of the wear period, the wrist-movement information is subjected to computerized classification algorithms, which generate a detailed sleep/wake, body-clock, cognitive-effectiveness, and fatigue-risk report.

Your are able to see real time performance effectiveness scores in real-time, directly on your Readiband!

FAST® Fatigue Avoidance Scheduling Tool

Fatigue Science - FAST

Sleep data collected by the Readiband over time is aggregated providing fatigue analytics and visual reports which display day by day, and hourly visualisation of how fatigue varies and resulting mental effectiveness. Their Fatigue Avoidance Scheduling Tool (FAST®) can be used to input upcoming work and travel schedules, and combine them with actual historical sleep data from the Readiband to predict fatigue levels. Schedules can then be modified where possible to decrease fatigue levels, optimize performance and improve mental efficiency.

This human optimising performance solution can

● Let you understand and improve overall daily performance
● Plan for attaining peak performance when it counts the most
● Increase mental effectiveness and productivity overall
● Improve the well-being and morale of employees

Garmin Vivofit Slide

GARMIN ACTIVE

Whatever your level of fitness, you already know the active steps you take now can improve your overall wellness today, tomorrow and well into your future. And while it seems simple to get out of that chair more often and move, making it stick is another matter. That’s where vívofit can turn good intentions into lifelong habits. It’s the only fitness band that greets you with a personalised daily goal, tracks your progress and reminds you when it’s time to move.

Garmin Vivofit Video

Research shows that prolonged periods of inactivity such as sitting at a desk much of the day decreases your body’s production of fat-burning enzymes. You can reverse that effect by taking frequent, short walk breaks throughout your day.

While you might lose track of time and forget to move, vívofit knows. A red bar appears on the display after 1 hour of inactivity and builds when you’ve been sitting for too long, prompting you to be active for a few minutes.
